Washing machine has excessive noise during drain cycles, any ideas?

My washing machine used to be totally quiet, but now it is mildly loud when draining the water, just before each spin cycle. It is not very noisy when actually spinning. Anyone ever had to deal with this and know what it is? It’s a 1996, GE Profile, electric model.

your drain trap is probably restricted

There is a possibility that the pump motor may be going out. Check the drain hose and the drain itself to see that is open and running freely. The only sound you should hear is the water draining and a slight hum from the pump motor.

Check to see if a kink in the drain line.

Pull the hose off the pump from the tank and stick your finger
inside and remove the bra wire or other trash
