Our dry well is not draining – any ideas?

Our home is 100+ yrs old, and has a dry well and septic tank. We had this problem around the same time last year, where the dry well is not draining. I did several loads of laundry (less than 10, but more than 5) over the weekend, and now I can smell the water from the drywell, which is in the basement! It’s just standing water. I don’t know how to fix this – it’s supposed to just seep back into the ground, but it’s just staying there. Any ideas? There are no pipes that could be clogged. Can I at least add anything to it to make it smell better? I really need to make it drain, but don’t know how! I don’t have this problem the rest of the year. Help!

Thanks!

You should call a plumber to pump it out. Getting water in the basement will cause foundation problems that will get more expensive.
