unable to remove drain screen (part of shower itself); aware clog is soap/hair; don’t have a lot of cash, wondering if there is a ‘solution/trick/fix’ that won’t need repeat trips to the hardware store..

Can I recommend using a wire coat hanger and some chlorine bleach.

Yes, there is. Buy a packet of bi-carbonate soda, and a bottle of brown vinegar, pour 1/3 of the bi-carb down the drain, followed by a big swig of vinegar. This should dislodge the gunk and may need a few applications to clear the drain. Good luck.

That’s all garbage… just use good ol’ fashion plunger on that sumbitch.

A CASHLESS SOLUTION:
Attach a garden hose to where the shower head is, or if you cannot remove the shower head then attach the garden hose to the bathroom sink.
NEXT: Turn ON water full blast. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE HOT. Have the other end in the bathtub drain and cover any gaps so that all the water is going down the pipe. I GUARANTEE this will WORK.

I would try first by using some off the shelf drain cleaner that will tackle hair. Hair tends to build up in the shower and if you can get rid of the hair, I think you’ll be okay.
Something else that has worked for me it so plunge the shower with your plunger. It’s doesn’t have to be completly blocked up for this to work. The pounding action of water and plunger and loosen up hair. It seems to pull it up first, then it can flow freely down the drain.
