3 Responses to “Clearing Drain. How does septic tank work?”
Julia Stannard Said:
septic tanks work by leaching liquids into a Drain fiel and retaining solids for later removal by a company liscensed to do so.
If you have any problems you go to a company that handles such matters.

a long long time ago in the future my father (a bricklayer) would build septic tanks as we (in the village) didn’t have access to mains drains. to answer your question a septic tank works in a similar way to sewage farms work bacteria break down the solids and the liquid flows over and under a set of baffles in the tank leaving the solids to be broken down to start the process off a dead chicken would be thrown into a new tank. it seems the process has stopped for some reason and may need restarting. one of the common reasons and this is and also true in sewage farms is using heavy duty cleaners pored down into the system killing the bacteria in the tank (some germs are good for you)

A septic tank is in effect a small private sewage treatment plat. The tank is usually depending on how many dwelling are connected to it smaller than a cesspool. Min size about 3 cu metres and hold roughly 600 gal capacity . This allows the sewage to pass through one small chamber into a second chamber . The sewage is liquefied by anaerobic bacteria. These are small micro organisms , although present cannot live in the presence of live free oxygen. Thus a tick sludge or scum form on the surface of the sewage and seals the contents. thus the liquefied sewage then passes via a system of drop pies which acts like a syphon and allows the liquid to pass into the second chamber via a coke filter . this action called aerobic which can be open to free oxygen. The filtered liquid then may filter into the subsoil in the adjacent area. Over a number of years the system can become blocked and needs cleaning.
Unlike a cesspool which is only a collection chamber and needs to be emptied out regularly and the contents taken to a proper facility to treat.
It has been known that cowboys some times emptied the contents from cesspool into nearby streams and polluted the waterways. If caught out they are fined by the courts.
