Bathroom drain has very dirty – any ideas on how to clean it?

We have a fully tiled bathroom on an upstairs floor, I have unscrewed the drain cover and inside there is a mess of grime – looks like white foamy stuff and probably hair etc. When we have a shower sometimes the soap comes out of the drain cover like dishwashing liquid bubbles. I’ve tried Draino but this didn’t work, today I found little midges (insects) in there.

    Muriatic acid.

I have a drain like that. I scoop out as much goop as i can, then pour in some baking soda and white vinegar. After about 15 minutes, run the hot water. Seems to help some.

Sounds like the drain may be a little clogged – although a rather icky job I would (with gloves on!) use a plunger and hands to pull out as much of the gunk as I can then try pouring something down the drain. Sounds like whatever is in the drain is stopping the draino from working.

    Sulfuric Acid for drains.
