Address drainage problems rapidly to look after your health
A plumber should be called immediately if sewerage is backing up into your bath tubs, showers or toilets. Action should be taken immediately as this can effect your health, sewage is full of germs, so this problem should be resolved immediately.
While you are waiting for the plumbers van to arrive, begin to clean up the area yourself with a solution of one cup of bleaching agent to every five gallons of water. While cleaning up wear long trousers, gloves, glasses and sensible footwear and make sure that your kids, aging people and household pets do not go near the problem area. Cleanse your hands later on with warm clean water and soap. The less water you have going down the drain the better in terms of preventing more sewage backing up whilst you wait for help.
It may be a blockage between the shower and toilet, or the waste line may be clogged. Your first concern, without worrying about the cause, should be protecting your family from detrimental waste.
Vomiting, fever, chills, stomach pain, diarrhea are some of the symptoms of exposure to drainage. Consult a doctor right away if you , or anyone in your family, exhibit any of the above symptoms.
Use a disinfectant (1 cup bleaching agent in 5 gallons water) to sanitise any toilet items, toys, fixtures or other items that may have been contaminated by the sewage. Throw away items that cannot be washed and cleaned (such as mattresses, stuffed animals, baby toys, and wood cutting boards) and food that may have come in contact with drainage water.
Use a drainage snake if sewerage is backing up in the shower. A plumbing snake that is a quarter inch thick and twenty five feet long will be the best choice. At this size it will be more easier for the tool to move all the way through the drainage and plumbing line. Sometimes in a bathroom the shower trap gets obstructed but at the same time the toilet remains unaffected. This happens because the toilet trap is installed about 6 inches above the floor and the shower drain is installed at the same level as the floor.
If you can’t remove this leakage on your own, you should ask for professional help from a drainage company. They will be able to clean up the leaked drainage thoroughly, as well as find out exactly where the clog is located. Unless you know what you are doing when you try to do your own plumbing remedies, it is generally wise to let the professionals handle it to begin with.
